Canine Good Citizen Program (CGC) @ Bow chika Wow Town

We are pleased to host Jenni Coes as our CGC Instructor!

The CGC concept applies to both ends of the leash and all CGC classes include training for the owner on responsible dog ownership.   The CGC is a six week program at $175 per dog.  Classes meet once per week.

The CGC program prepares your dog to take the ten step test offered by the AKC, which presents a training curriculum stressing responsible pet ownership and basic good manners for dogs including:

  • Accepting a Friendly Stranger
  • Sitting Politely for Petting
  • Appearance and Grooming
  • Out for a Walk (Walking on a Loose Leash)
  • Walking Through a Crowd
  • Sit and Down on Command
  • Staying in Place
  • Coming When Called
  • Reaction to Another Dog
  • Reaction to Distractions
  • Supervised Separation

CGC is also the first step you need to take if you are thinking of doing any therapy dog work.

Intro to K9 Nosework® @ Bow chika Wow Town

Nosework is easily the hottest new sport around, and it is easy to see why!  Inspired by professional detection dogs, its fun for humans, too.  Dogs love to participate, and it is good for building confidence and focus in dogs that have issues like shyness, reactivity, aggression, or a simple lack of confidence.  Any dog can participate; from puppies to very old or retired dogs.  In a matter of weeks, you will see your dog confidently ignoring distractions and focusing on the target scent.

Nosework is easy to learn, can be done anywhere, and does not require any specialized equipment.  You will be brought into your dog’s ‘world of scent’ as you learn to read their behavioral changes, and they’ll develop confidence as they are rewarded for following odor to its source.

Who is this activity suited for:

  • All breeds (not just purebreds!)
  • All sizes of dogs
  • Fearful dogs
  • Reactive dogs
  • All ages from puppies to geriatric dogs
  • Dogs with physical restrictions including blind and deaf dogs
  • Any handler from total novice to experienced dog handler

All dogs are worked one at a time.  Those not working are crated.  No obedience is required.   Our intro class starts with getting your dog excited about using his nose to seek out a favorite toy or treat.  Rewards are hidden in one of several boxes, expanding the game to entire room, and then onto other interior spaces.   Pet parents will also learn the basic concepts is searching for odor, proper use of equipment, and how to make and place hides.

This is a 6 week class meeting every Tuesday at 6pm.  Cost to participate is $160 for the entire 6 weeks.

This is our second course offered in our nosework program.  This course continues on where Intro to Nosework left off.  Into to Nosework is a pre-requisite for this class as our searches are progressive and we build upon each dog’s progress from previous weeks.

In this class we will introduce food and toy distractions and work on acclimating to exterior searches on lead.   Our goals will be having the dogs maintain the energy, stamina and mental focus during their searches as well having them find the odor regardless of the environments around them.

Cocktails for Canines @ SkyLine at Waterplace

Bow chika Wow Town is a supporting business for this annual fundraiser for the New England Humane Society.
The 3rd Annual Cocktails for Canines is an event that cannot be missed!   We will begin with an IPA & wine tasting at 6:00. We will have IPA’s from many local breweries! At 7:00 the DJ will start playing and the dance floor will open! The evening will offer a silent auction, a photo booth, raffles, heavy apps, and some fantastic company! The Skyline offers amazing views of the city!

What to Wear: Cocktail Party attire.  The terrace will be open, the grill will be going, the music will be playing and the drinks will be flowing!

The holidays can be a confusing time for your dog! With new people, new activities, and new things just laying around for the taking the holidays are a test of self control for our dogs. We’re here to help with a 1.5-hour introduction to some of what you and your dog should know to make it through these stressful times together.
 
There will be 4 working spots (with your dog) and 5 observation spots (without your dog) available for this event. Working spot applicants must be pre-screened.

Pet CPR and First Aid Certification @ Bow chika Wow Town

The PetCPR+ Certification program is designed to teach the fundamentals of canine and feline CPR and First Aid.

This class is ideal for anyone who loves animals including animal professionals, obedience trainers, kennel staff, pet retailers, pet sitters, animal shelter staff/volunteers, rescue personnel, groomers, First Responders, Fire/EMT and pet owners. This course will provide an overview of what to do for a pet in an emergency situation prior to getting veterinary care. Curriculum for all classes is developed by licensed veterinary professionals using veterinary industry standard methods of emergency medical care.

Registration Fee- $69.95

Learning Objectives:

  • Safety techniques when working with sick and/or injured animals
  • How to perform emergency triage and assess if an animal is experiencing a life threatening medical emergency
  • How to restrain and properly transport sick and/or injured animals
  • How to provide emergency first aid to dogs and cats en-route to veterinary care
  • How to take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, CRT) and determine normal vs abnormal readings
  • Learn about the importance of the pet first aid kit and how to use the materials in it during an emergency
  • How to manage and provide first aid for many common medical emergencies such as severe wounds, poisoning, burns, choking and more
  • How to perform the most current industry standard method of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on dogs and cats (Participants will receive a PetCPR+ Certification valid for 2 years)

Course participants will receive the following:

  • A copy of our 88+ page full color Canine and Feline CPR and First Aid Reference Guide E-book (printed books may be purchased for an additional $24.95)
  • 2 year subscription to the Pet Emergency Education Online Resource Center
  • Upon successful completion and receiving a passing score on all assessments, CPR certification wallet cards and an official certificate may be printed immediately at the link under the final exam section
  • Copyright access to use the PetCPR+ logo to promote that you are certified
  • Upon completion of this class participants will be certified in Canine and Feline CPR and First Aid**
